The Challenge
In October 2023, a major tech company released two new mobile devices featuring a first-of-its-kind contactless temperature sensor. Located on the back of the premium model, it allows users to quickly scan an object to get its temperature.
The company even applied for regulatory approval to enable its thermometer app to take users' temperatures and save the data to a fitness app. Recognizing the significant potential of smartphones serving as medical devices, the tech company enlisted Hatch Studio to explore and test concepts around health measurements and monitoring through the smartphone.
Our Approach
1
In-Depth Interviews
Identifying points of pushback and how to address them in four different countries to provide engineers and designers with the international insights they needed, Hatch Studio conducted more than 60 one-on-one in-depth interviews with users that currently use either a smartphone and/or a wearable device for health sensing and tracking in Japan, Germany, México, and the US.
2
Testing and Analysis
The objective was to test various health monitoring concepts to understand users' reactions and expectations regarding the critical user journeys for our client's smartphone, wearable device and their combined use. The research also included deeper analysis of perceived data accuracy of measurements, cultural specificities and concerns with health data storage.
Outcomes
Guidance is the key
Smartphone health tracking became mainstream in the last few years and most people are unaware of the different ways we can use this technology. This challenge needs to be addressed by providing users with guidance and support on how to effectively use the health data they receive to take control of their well-being.
Maintaining user privacy
Health information is sensitive data across every culture and country, sacred even. Robust security and privacy measures need to be implemented to assure users their health data will remain confidential, never shared with third parties, and never tampered with.
Building a global product
Even if all users worldwide have the same end goal of monitoring their health, each market still has its unique user expectations. We recognized the diverse needs and priorities of users across different markets and adapted features to different market needs – making the new mobile device a truly global product. We’ve shaped the future of health technology by balancing guidance, privacy, and market diversity, establishing our client as a pioneer in smartphone-based health sensing. We have begun the era of health technology for well-being on a global scale by providing users with the necessary tools, support, and privacy assurances.
